  • All recommended dental hygiene therapies are based on client specific needs, this is established at the initial new client oral assessment. Typically, those living in LTC require less invasive therapies depending on client tolerance and safety. This is referred to as Palliative Dental Hygiene Oral Care. See Where We Work

    PDHOC is provided when a person becomes dependent on others for care. PDHOC focuses on reducing the severity of oral/dental symptoms, preventing pain, maintaining cleanliness and comfort in the mouth to end of life.

    Typically, PDHOC oral care which is a non-invasive approach and doesn’t require scalers ‘sharp tools’, however, the use of specialized brushes for soft plaque and food debris removal, and antimicrobials are required to be effective for tissue health.

    Providing PDHOC aligns with CDHA’s ethical principles of beneficence (doing good) and non-maleficence (do no harm) by promoting the well-being of the person and preventing needless suffering.

  • All oral care services are provided in the client’s room or area where they are most comfortable.

Typically, those living in LTC or are home bound often require less invasive therapies depending on client tolerance and safety. This non-invasive approach is referred to as Palliative Dental Hygiene Oral Care.

    Many clients receive PDHOC weekly, bi-monthly, monthly to help maintain the integrity of comfort and oral cleanliness with non invasive oral therapies.

  • We will assist with referrals and recommendations to a dentist or oral surgeon. Your loved one will always have the choice to seek oral care from a dentist or other allied health professional at any point.

    You will be required to assist your loved one in transportation needs and arrangements necessary for any appointments outside of the home or LTC home.

  • Yes, referrals to dentists, oral surgeons, dieticians, medical practitioners and others can be arranged.

  • No. If you have a dentist already, we will encourage you to keep that relationship. We pride ourselves with our relationship with all local dentists, and we will make suggestions to you to see your dentist for reasons outside the dental hygiene scope of practice.

    If you do not have a dentist, we can make a referral in the event a dentist is suggested.

  • Yes, we accept most dental insurance plans, Private insurance policies - ie: Sunlife, Greenshield ect, Non insured health benefits, Canadian Dental Care Program, and Veterans Affairs.

  • Interim Stabilization Therapy (IST) is a non invasive therapy applied to defective tooth structures (decay). The goal is to maintain and prevent further tooth structure damage, reduce risk of pain or infection. It involves the use of a fluoride-releasing material that helps strengthen the cavity and does not require anesthesia. This procedure is painless.

    It is important with any type of stabilization therapy that the teeth and gums gums remain cleaned daily.

    If it is reasonable to refer to a dentist for permanent repair options, a referral maybe suggested.

    It is in the scope of practice for a dental hygiene to apply this therapy.

  • Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid used on defective teeth (cavities) to stop the progression of decay. This application process is painless, no need for needles or drilling. Once the SDF is applied to the affected area on the tooth, the colour may darken and remineralization is achieved.

    In many cases where a dentist would do a traditional filling (drilling/needles) this is a non-invasive therapy and is used very commonly in geriatrics, pediatrics and those with disabilities making traditional fillings unrealistic or an unsafe procedure.

    This is often used in combination with Interim Stabilization Therapy.

    It is in the scope of practice for a dental hygiene to apply this therapy.

  • Yes. All appointments with the mobile unit must be established ahead of time.

  • Yes, a fee of $50.00 is applicable for dental hygiene appointments not cancelled 24 hours prior to the scheduled date.
